These summer days are my favorite. I sit on my back patio and have my quiet time there. Sometimes I journal, almost always read my Morning and Evening, Scripture and recently a book about old hymns and the stories behind them.
I was thinking this morning about how we are going through the hardest time during what is supposed to be the best days of our lives. We still have our health and the girls, and Wesley, and each other but life is so hard. In these moments of sorrow, we often feel like the rest of our lives feel so long without Julian. We are ready for eternity now.
After writing about that in my journal, I read Psalm 90. If you ever doubt that Gods word is living, take your complaints to God and see how He responds! It was just what I needed to hear.
My days are so short in the grand scheme of things. How can I make each one count?
The hymn that prompted me to read that particular Psalm was, O God Our Help in Ages Past by Isaac Watts (1719). If you’re looking for a quiet time inspiration this morning, take a few minutes to dwell on Psalm 90 and then enjoy these words by Watts:
1 O God, our Help in ages past,
our Hope for years to come,
our Shelter from the stormy blast,
and our eternal Home.
2 Under the shadow of Thy throne
Thy saints have dwelt secure;
sufficient is Thine arm alone,
and our defense is sure.
3 Before the hills in order stood,
or earth received its frame,
from everlasting Thou art God,
to endless years the same.
4 A thousand ages in Thy sight
are like an evening gone,
short as the watch that ends the night
before the rising sun.
5 Time, like an ever-rolling stream
bears all its sons away;
they fly forgotten, as a dream
dies at the op’ning day.
6 O God, our Help in ages past,
our Hope for years to come,
be Thou our Guard while life shall last,
and our eternal Home!
God truly has been our dwelling place through this trial. It’s a fine line between utter despair and feeling His sheltering. We often waver back and forth each side of that line throughout the day. Noy likened it the other day to Peter walking on the water. As soon as Peter took his eyes off Christ, he began to sink. As soon as we look to our future, the what if’s and the if only’s, and the why me’s, and let me tell you, those thoughts come often, we begin to sink too.
The storms of life are a given. He said they would come. Time really is an ever rolling stream that will take us all away. May we run to Him to satisfy us every morning with His unfailing love. May He make us glad according to the days we have been afflicted. May His favor be upon us and may He establish the work of our hands for the rest of our days.
Happy weekend friends.
